Project for a sculpture titled ephemeron x  (x = increasing number)

I have worked on quite a bit of pieces that had a rather therapeutical function for me after being there in downtown New York on that beautiful sunny Tuesday morning, one day in September 2001, and paintings like Abyssus abyssum invocat (generally translated as "hell calls hell", it means also "evil begets evil") is only one of them having a direct link to that morning and the events following - events to often reduced to a political agenda by people impossibly able to apprehend the events and feelings of that day as much as they're unable, if not unwilling, to apprehend its resulting events, and condensing every bit of it into words such as sacrifice, honor, freedom and liberty - glorious notions of the absent who feels uneasy at the obvious notion of vulnerabilty learned the hard way, and ignoring those who stand to their word.

(see portfolio 2006-2007 for larger image and info)

It took me five years to be able to paint again, to apprehend what happened that day, to understand what to think, what to say, and how to say it - how to try to make a difference. It will take most of the young men and women coming back from war a lifetime to apprehend their experience over there.
The sculpture is for all those who won't come back.

ephemeron x

(Project for a) monument to US servicemen and women that have given their lives in Iraq.

The project will be realized as an outdoor sculpture in corrosion-resistant A588 steel as soon as final, concluding and undisputable as well as undisputed numbers of casualties are known.

The total weight (lbs) of the sculpture will be coinciding with the number of casualties (x) and honour their lost lives by adding its weight forever to the Earth's surface.

This project does not take any political position or whatsoever on the ongoing conflict, but does have as sole and unique reason of existence to emphasize on the loss of young men and women who are fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.

As of November 22nd, 2008 , the sculpture's name is     "ephemeron 4133"
